About the Program
The Journalism and Media Studies program prepares you to think critically and communicate effectively in a rapidly changing media landscape. You'll explore how journalism and other forms of media—from social platforms to television and podcasting—shape public understanding and culture. Through a mix of hands-on production courses and concept-driven classes, you’ll build practical skills in writing, reporting, and digital storytelling while examining issues like media ethics, global communication, and representation. Whether you're interested in news, entertainment, public relations, or media policy, JMS gives you the tools to inform, influence, and engage audiences across platforms.

The first step is to apply to Rutgers–New Brunswick.
During your first year, you can explore the Journalism and Media Studies major by taking: 04:189:102 Introduction to Media. You should also register for 01:355:101 College Writing, which serves as the pre-requisite for our lynchpin course, 04:567:200 Writing for Media.

To apply to the Journalism and Media Studies major, you must first complete a few prerequisites:
- 04:189:102 Introduction to Media with a grade of C or better
- College Writing (01:355:101) or equivalent with a grade of C or better. You must also take this as a pre-requisite for our lynchpin course, 04:567:200 Writing for Media.
- At least 15 completed credits at Rutgers
- A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
Once you complete these requirements, you can apply to the Journalism & Media Studies major through SC&I during the application period.

5-Year Bachelor of Arts/Master of Communication and Media Program
Want to earn a Journalism and Media Studies bachelor’s degree and a Master of Communication and Media degree?
- Apply in your junior or senior year.
- Save money by paying undergraduate tuition rates for Master of Communication and Media courses (taken in Fall or Spring semesters only).
- Complete your Master of Communication and Media degree within 12 months of full-time study or at your own pace.

Journalism and Media Studies Internships
Journalism and Media Studies majors can complete an internship for course credit, gaining hands-on experience at media organizations or in related fields. While not required, the department encourages internships to help students achieve their career goals. Rutgers' proximity to New York City and Philadelphia offers exciting opportunities, with past interns working at CNN, ESPN, and top social media and PR companies. The Journalism and Media Studies major admits undergraduates after they’ve completed at least 15 credits at Rutgers. One of those courses must be 04:189:102 Introduction to Media, and another must be Expository Writing.
