Research Groups
Focusing on the evolving complexities of communication, information, and media that affect today’s social and professional environments, our research takes a collaborative approach that cross the range of disciplines within the School of Communication and Information.
Labs are small, collaborative research groups led by one or two principal investigators who work with faculty, students, and external partners to conduct research, develop proposals, and publish findings. They focus on a defined research agenda, meet regularly, and often aim to secure ongoing external funding, with some operating temporarily as “pop-up” labs tied to specific projects or grants.
Collaboratories are faculty groups that collaborate on research, grant proposals, and publications, often involving students, post-docs, and external partners while meeting regularly to share ideas and develop joint projects. Unlike labs, their leadership rotates and they focus on incubating diverse projects, sometimes serving as a platform for spin-off pop-up labs.
Working Groups are faculty-led communities that meet regularly to deepen knowledge, refine research methods, and collaborate on shared scholarly interests while connecting with broader academic networks. They are often time-bound and exploratory, sometimes leading to the creation of collaboratories, labs, or other research initiatives.
