Valeria Yanez COM’26 believes in the power of communication to shape stories that matter. For Yanez, communication is more than a major — it is a creative and strategic outlet that enables her to make meaningful connections across industries and audiences.

“I chose Communication because it is an incredibly versatile field that allows me to be both creative and intentional in the work I do,” said Yanez, who is specializing in Public Relations and minoring in Digital Communication, Information, and Media (DCIM). “Whether it’s in sports, health, beauty, or fashion, I love how communication has the power to shape narratives, build trust, and create meaningful connections.”

Public relations quickly became her focus, especially as she saw how rapidly the industry continues to evolve. “What excites me most about PR is how constantly evolving it is — especially with the rise of digital and social media,” Yanez explains. “The fast-paced nature of the field pushes me to stay curious, adaptable, and innovative, and I genuinely enjoy being in spaces where communication can make a real impact.”

Leadership Opportunities Beyond and In The Classroom

Her growth at SC&I has extended well beyond lectures and textbooks. Yanez has taken on leadership and professional roles that allow her to apply what she learns in real-world settings. She currently serves as Vice President of Communications for Rutgers PRSSA; she is a member of Scarlet PR, the SC&I student-run public relations firm; and she is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the Communications honor society.

Alongside her campus roles, Yanez is gaining valuable industry experience. She currently interns at Coyne PR and she has previously held roles with Rutgers Athletics and the YES Network, building a strong foundation in both agency and sports media environments.

“SC&I has given me the opportunity to get involved in organizations that have helped shape my professional and personal growth,” she says. “These experiences have allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in real-world settings while building strong relationships within the SC&I community.”

Yanez recalls taking the course Principles of Public Relations  taught by Assistant Professor of Professional Practice, Communication Mark Beal as a defining moment. “It was the class that truly solidified my decision to pursue PR,” she explains. “I remember thinking, ‘I belong here — this is exactly what I want to do.’” Through the course, she gained insight into the history of public relations, the wide range of career paths available, and the real-world influence of PR professionals.

Setting Her Sights on Sports PR

Looking ahead, Yanez has clear aspirations for her career. “One of my long-term career goals is to work in public relations for a professional sports organization, particularly within the MLB or NFL,” she shares. Her passion for sports communications deepened after a major professional milestone. “I was fortunate to intern with the New York Yankees this past summer, an experience that further solidified my passion for sports communications.”

For Yanez, sports PR is about more than game-day highlights. “What I love most about PR in sports is the opportunity to tell stories beyond what fans see on the field,” she says. “Through strategic storytelling, PR allows us to highlight athletes as people — showcasing their journeys, challenges, and impact beyond the game. Being part of that process and helping shape those narratives is something I find incredibly meaningful and rewarding.”

Growth Happens Outside The Comfort Zone

As Yanez works toward her anticipated graduation in May 2026, she reflects on the advice that has guided her path — and what she hopes to pass on to others. “One piece of advice that has always stayed with me is to dream big,” she says. “Never let anyone convince you that your goals are unrealistic or out of reach. If you’re passionate, hardworking, and willing to put yourself out there, you are capable of achieving more than you think.”

She also encourages students to embrace uncertainty. “Another important lesson I’ve learned is to do things that make you uncomfortable,” Yanez explains. “Growth often happens outside of your comfort zone, and some of the most rewarding opportunities come from taking risks and saying yes before you feel completely ready.”

Be A Sponge: Learning From Everything

Above all, she emphasizes the importance of staying open to learning. “Lastly, I would encourage students to be a sponge,” she says. “Absorb everything — lessons from class, advice from professors, feedback from peers, and hands-on experiences. The more open you are to learning, the more prepared you’ll be for whatever comes next.”

With her leadership, passion for storytelling, and commitment to growth, Valeria Yanez is preparing to make her mark in the world of public relations — one story at a time.
