Degree Requirements
Students accepted into the Journalism and Media Studies major complete 33 credits of Journalism and Media Studies coursework plus one interdisciplinary SC&I requirement. All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
As a Journalism and Media Studies major, you will take courses that faculty members have carefully crafted and continuously refined to help you build understanding and skills that will be useful while on campus and in your career. These offerings will provide a foundation in your exploration of areas such as:

Choose two Journalism and Media Studies courses designated as practice-based. These are typically focused on skills like reporting, production, and digital editing. (Course listings vary by semester.)
Choose two Journalism and Media Studies courses designated as concept-based, including at least one at the 400-level. These courses focus on media theory, analysis, and critical frameworks.
You must select twelve elective credits from the course listing for the JMS major. You may take any course in the major as an elective.
The Department of Journalism and Media Studies is committed to addressing issues of diversity, difference, and social justice. An understanding of these issues is essential preparation for careers in journalism and media. As a result, you must take at least one of the following courses to complete the major:
