Careers and Internships

Master of Information internships fall into two categories:

  • School Library Field Experience – for K–12 school library settings
  • Non-School Library Field Experience – placements in public, academic, and special libraries; archives and museums; plus information-focused roles in data science, technology and information management, user experience/HCI, digital scholarship, and related nonprofit, corporate, or government organizations

Internships are optional but strongly encouraged for students without prior professional experience.

What to Expect

Students must have completed 15 credits to apply for the Field Experience Course 592 (3 credits). Some library projects may require specific courses as prerequisites.

Internships require a minimum of 150 hours of supervised professional work in a library or other information organization. You may attend meetings with the faculty adviser and other students if required, keep a journal, and complete a brief summary paper. Placement is based on the student's background and career objectives.
