DEI Commitments

The School of Communication and Information is committed to pursuing inclusive excellence through:

Centering Inclusion

We commit to maintain a vibrant community where diverse ideas and perspectives are shared. We strive to create a culture where everyone in our community feels safe, respected, and able to bring their full selves to SC&I.

Community Engagement

We commit to honor and support work done by and for underrepresented populations. We actively cultivate relationships with our external communities to broaden access and share knowledge.

Continuous Improvement

We commit to offer ongoing diversity education so that all members of the SC&I community may continue to expand their equity mindset and be prepared to competently engage in our increasingly diverse and ever-evolving world.

SC&I Diversity Strategic Plan

The School of Communication & Information is committed to Rutgers University’s institutional diversity goals. Our work is guided by our Diversity Strategic Plan, created in alignment with the university’s five strategic priorities for fostering inclusive excellence.

    • Increase the diverse representation among faculty, staff, and Ph.D. students at SC&I
    • Provide community, support, and mentorship for students to increase belonging
    • Strengthen ties with our diverse alumni community
    • Cultivate a culture of belonging at SC&I
    • Review entire school curricula for DEI values
    • Find mechanisms to support faculty research that is under-supported due to topics and/or method
    • Broaden education and increase capacity for supporting equitable and inclusive pedagogical practices within SC&I
    • Implement comprehensive teaching evaluation procedures to combat implicit bias in student evaluations
    • Communicate our research and scholarship to communities
    • Design projects with and for communities
    • Advance internal processes for recognizing, mentoring, supporting, and evaluating engaged scholarship  
    • Formally designate responsibility for DEI work to a high-level administrator
    • Build capacity of Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, chairs and directors to integrate inclusive policy and practices into their work at SC&I
    • Offer learning, development and networking opportunities around inclusive excellence practices to a pipeline of leaders
    • Build network within and outside of Rutgers with other leaders at Rutgers’ schools, academic and professional associations
    • Review all school documentation and bylaws for alignment with university's diversity strategic priorities
    • Update website to highlight inclusive excellence at SC&I
    • Create a historical record of SC&I’s work toward inclusive excellence (e.g., hiring, awards, recognition)
    • Broaden education and increase capacity for supporting an inclusive culture at SC&I
