Honors and Scholarships for Communication Majors
SC&I is proud to recognize and support outstanding Communication students each year through a range of honors, scholarships, and awards. These opportunities celebrate academic achievement, leadership, service, and dedication to the field of communication — while also providing meaningful financial support.
Whether you’re pursuing departmental honors or applying for scholarships, these programs are designed to help you stand out, achieve your goals, and prepare for your next steps.
Communication Honors Program
The Communication Honors Program is for seniors who complete a two-semester thesis project. This experience allows you to explore a topic in depth, work closely with faculty, and produce original research that showcases your academic excellence.
Scholarships
To be considered for these scholarships and awards, complete the application associated with each award. You may apply for more than one.

SC&I Scholarship for Communication Majors – For full-time Communication majors who are rising juniors or seniors and who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and financial need. Students who will be juniors or seniors beginning Fall 2025 are eligible. Unofficial transcripts and essay are required.
Hugh Taliaferro Memorial Scholarship – For full-time Communication majors who are rising juniors or seniors, and who demonstrate unusual aptitude in Communication or render exceptional service to the Department or University community. Students who will be juniors or seniors beginning Fall 2025 are eligible. Unofficial transcripts and essay are required.
Todd Hunt Public Service Endowed Prize for Communication – For full-time Communication majors who are rising seniors have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and exemplary involvement and service to more than one group or society. Students who will be seniors beginning Fall 2025 are eligible. Unofficial transcripts and essay are required.
Julian Breen Memorial Endowed Scholarship – For full-time Communication majors who are rising juniors or seniors, and have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and significant service to the department, the University, and/or the community. Students who will be juniors or seniors beginning Fall 2025 are eligible. Unofficial transcripts and essay are required.
Shaun & Patricia Mickus Endowed Scholarship in Honor of Prof. Todd Hunt - For full or part-time declared Communication majors who demonstrate academic achievement of a minimum 3.0 GPA, community service, and financial need (as determined by the University Office of Financial Aid).
SC&I Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship for Communication Majors – For full-time Communication majors who are rising juniors or seniors who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and financial need. Students who will be juniors or seniors beginning Fall 2025 are eligible. Unofficial transcripts and essay are required.
Todd Hunt Endowed Scholarship for PRSSA – For an outstanding undergraduate Communication major who is also an active member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). The recipient must show outstanding achievement and financial need. Unofficial transcripts and essay are required.
Departmental Honors
To graduate with departmental honors in Communication, you must have an overall GPA of 3.25 and a GPA in the major of 3.65.
Scholastic Honors in SC&I
To receive the Scholastic Honors designation for graduation, you must achieve both:
3.65 GPA or above in the major, and
3.25 GPA overall in undergraduate studies
These honors are not dependent upon participation in an official Honors program.
