Biography

Alyse Shorland is a two-time Emmy and Peabody-winning director and producer. She has made films and series independently and in collaboration with network and streaming clients, including HBO, Netflix, CNN, HULU, NBC Films, and FX. Her most recent projects include the coming-of-age documentary "The Debutantes" and "Empire of Ebony", the first film to tell the story of the Johnson Publishing Company, creators of Ebony and Jet magazine. She was previously a director on The Weekly, a documentary series with the New York Times, Fiasco, and Vice News Tonight for HBO. She’s produced stories for CBS Sunday Morning and the CNN documentary series Black in America with Soledad O’Brien. In 2023, she was named to Doc NYC’s 40 Under 40. She received her master’s degree in documentary filmmaking from New York University.

Shorland has received funding for her films from the Ford Foundation, Impact Partners, and private foundations. Her awards include: the 2023 PANO Cinematographers Lab, a 2022 Emmy for Best Feature Story in a Newscast: "Zero Tolerance", Vice News Tonight, a 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story: "The Bret Kavanaugh Hearings", Vice News Tonight, a 2019 Front Page Award for Best Documentary: "Zero Tolerance," Vice News Tonight, a 2018 Gracie Award for Best News Program: Vice News Tonight, a 2018 Gracie Award for Best Documentary: "Don’t Fail Me: Education in America" on CNN, and a 2011 Peabody Award for coverage of the Gulf Oil Spill on CNN Specials.
