Research and Exchange Programs

Ph.D. students have access to robust opportunities for research development, training, and exchange across Rutgers and partner institutions.

Research Practicum (16:194:608)

Required for all Ph.D. students (3 credits), the Research Practicum [16:194:608] involves partnering with a faculty supervisor on a research project of interest—ideally culminating in a paper or poster submission to a recognized conference or refereed journal (guidelines PDF). Each year, students present their work at the program’s annual Ph.D. Poster Session, which emulates a professional academic conference—displaying visual work and engaging peers and faculty in discussion.

Responsible Conduct of Research Training

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) training program covers NIH best practices and federal requirements for responsible research, including:

  • Professional, personal, and financial responsibility in research
  • Managing conflicts of commitment and use of resources
  • Policies for human subjects and vertebrate animal research
  • Safe laboratory practices

Exchange Programs

  • Through the Inter-University Exchange program, Rutgers graduate students can take advantage of partnerships with other universities to broaden their academic and research experiences.

  • The International Research and Exchange Programs provide opportunities for students to engage in global collaborations, build international connections, and expand the reach of their scholarship.
