Biography

Brent Ruben's research, teaching, and application focuses on organizational communication, leadership, assessment, strategy and change with a particular focus on higher education institutions. He also has studied cross-cultural communication, adaptation, and competencies. A third topic of research has been in the area of simulation and gaming. In each of these areas, his work is built on the foundation of communication systems theory. His publications on these topics include more than 60 books and 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters.

Brent is a founder of the Department of Communication, first director of the School of Communication and Information Ph.D. Program, and a founder and first president of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education (NCCI) – now named the Network for Change and Continuous Innovation in Higher Education. He served on the Department of Commerce/Malcolm Baldrige advisory team on health and education and received the Baldrige National Quality Foundation Inaugural Award for Leadership Excellence in Education. He has also been recognized for his scholarly and professional achievement by the National Communication Association (NCA), the National Association for College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the Network.  

His current research focuses on leadership competencies, organizational assessment, and dynamics and effective practices for organizational change.
