Biography
Julie Johnson boasts 30+ years of experience, with a background spanning higher education, international non-profits, and public education. She leads the development and delivery of professional studies programs that align with workforce needs, emphasizing innovative, and industry-responsive learning. Her portfolio includes non-degree digital credentialed programs designed to support career advancement and lifelong learning.
She previously facilitated partnerships for Teachers College at Columbia University, connecting faculty and organizations to build professional studies programs. She holds a deep commitment to teacher development, demonstrated both during her time at Teachers College and through her work with public school districts across the tri-state area. Previously, as director of continuing and distance education for The Salvation Army, she customized continuing education programs in collaboration with higher education partners for non-profit executives from around the globe. Johnson has mentored emerging leaders, led professional institutes, provided executive coaching, and also contributed thought leadership to initiatives on alternative credentialing and workforce development. Her work has been recognized with the New Jersey Governor’s Teacher Award and a New Jersey Educational Technologist of the Year Award. She is also a Federal Education Policy Fellow.
In addition to her leadership at Rutgers, Johnson serves on university-wide committees dedicated to advancing continuing education, digital credentialing, and the integration of AI into instructional programs for adult learners—helping shape institutional strategies that expand access and foster innovation. She is also an active board member of The Salvation Army in Trenton, N.J., continuing her longstanding commitment to community service and organizational leadership in the non-profit sector.
