Biography
Craig R. Scott is Professor Emeritus at SC&I and the John T. Jones, Jr. Centennial Professor and chair of the Department of Communication Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. His research and teaching focus on organizational communication, especially anonymity and identity/identification in workplace and technology contexts, with particular interest in “hidden organizations,” where organizations and/or their members conceal key aspects of their identities from various audiences.
He was named a Fellow of the International Communication Association in 2023, received the Frederick M. Jablin Award for Outstanding Contributions to Organizational Communication from the ICA Organizational Communication Division in 2021, and his book “Anonymous Agencies, Backstreet Businesses, and Covert Collectives: Rethinking Organizations in the 21st Century” received Top Book Awards from the Organizational Communication and Applied Communication Divisions of the National Communication Association in 2014. He is co-editor of the “International Encyclopedia of Organizational Communication,” has guest edited a special issue of Management Communication Quarterly on hidden organizations, and serves on editorial boards for multiple journals in communication.
After 14 years at SC&I, where he served as a department chair and director of the doctoral program, Scott returned to the University of Texas at Austin as chair of their Department of Communication Studies. When he is not doing his teaching, research, and administrative duties, he enjoys traveling (mostly to see his kids Parker and Mikyla), spending time with his wife and academic colleague Laurie Lewis, playing basketball and pickleball, and attending home games of his Denver Broncos.
