Shravan Regret Iyer

Biography

Shravan Regret Iyer, Ph.D., is a New York-based, multiple award-winning immersive media and extended reality (XR) researcher, academic, and scientific storyteller whose work bridges scholarly inquiry, teaching, and public-facing communication.

His research examines how media technologies shape society, with a particular focus on immersive and experiential media—including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and 360° storytelling—and their implications for journalism, science communication, and public understanding of social and environmental issues. Iyer’s scholarship includes work on climate change communication, COVID-19 news storytelling, sports media, tourism, and the historical roots of virtual reality, including research on FIFA World Cup host countries’ use of virtual reality in sports journalism and public relations and the United Nations VR content in climate change storytelling.

At Rutgers, Iyer teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies and the Department of Communication’s Master of Communication and Media program, including Digital Media Ethics and Exploring New Media.

Scientific storytelling has been central to his work for more than 15 years. As a science communicator, Iyer uses multimedia tools and immersive media technologies to communicate complex research and scientific information in ways that broaden access, foster empathy and solidarity, and help audiences engage more deeply with issues related to health and the environment.
