Biography
Jon Oliver's research is focused on building deep learning AI models to characterize the microstructure of engineered materials. His research utilizes material characterization technologies, including electron microscopy and x-ray computed tomography to better understand the strength and resilience of high-strength and high-performance materials and the processing to reduce inherent defects. Oliver's work also utilizes deep and machine learning techniques and coding to understand and utilize AI in engineered systems as well as cybersecurity and information theory.
He has served as chief of staff to the chancellor at Rutgers - New Brunswick, as well as chair, vice chair, and parliamentarian of the University Senate. He has also been the senate representative to the Rutgers Board of Governors and held multiple posts as part of the board -- for example. the committee on academic and student affairs, the committee on audit, and the executive committee (of which he was also chair). He has also been part of the Rutgers University IT Leadership Council and an adjunct member of the Ph.D. faculty since 1999. From 2019-2022, he was an Educause Leadership Institute proposal reviewer.
He recently wrote "A Deep Learning Model to Quantify the Microstructure of Additive Manufactured Al2O3" submitted for publication in the Materials Science and Engineering journals.
