Biography

Amanpreet Kaur, MLIS, MPH, CFCS, is a former science librarian, public health fellow, wellness walks coordinator, and teaching assistant at the University of Pennsylvania. Through projects at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Literacy Lab and We Need Books Library, Greece’s only multilingual library, Kaur explored how libraries and literacy efforts support health and wellness. Her academic library work intersected with STEM education, public health, campus wellness, and community engagement; her specialties included engineering, health sciences, community health, health literacy, and dental medicine.

As part of her public health fieldwork, Kaur conducted a community health learning needs assessment with We Need Books Library to explore how it could support the health and wellness information needs of its multilingual and multicultural Athens community. A member of the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Specialist Roster, Kaur is interested in collaborating with international organizations on similar projects. More recently, she reviewed the impact of anti-science and health-related misinformation on child abuse laws and policies. She also uses her librarian skills to help an international, multidisciplinary professional membership nonprofit organization disseminate research and evidence-based, trauma-informed practices for addressing and preventing the health effects of violence, abuse, trauma, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

Kaur previously worked at Rutgers in multiple capacities before returning to SC&I as a part-time faculty member in 2020. In 2019, the American Library Association New Member Round Table named her an “Alternative Voice” in librarianship. Outside of libraries, she volunteers for nonprofit organizations and enjoys Zumba, yoga, high-intensity interval training, and painting.
