Biography
Karen Joy Abraham's research explores how people navigate uncertainty in digital information ecosystems, with an emphasis on design, trust, and equity. Grounded in interdisciplinary frameworks from human-computer interaction (HCI), health informatics, and science and technology studies (STS), her work combines qualitative and participatory methods to critically examine misinformation, digital infrastructure, and user experience. Her research also investigates how users adopt, interact with, and adapt to AI assistants and chatbots--especially in high-stakes settings like healthcare. Joy has contributed to UX research teams at Ipsos and Amazon, where she led studies bridging academic and industry perspectives. She currently is a clinical adjunct lecturer at Pace University, offering courses in UX design, research methods, and technology ethics.
Abraham has contributed to research at SC&I's Health Humanities, Communication, and Informatics Working Group and served as secretary of the Doctoral Student Association. She has received several honors, including being named Pace University’s Outstanding Student of the Year and being selected as an AMIA LEAD Fund Scholar. Joy has co-authored several papers published in venues such as the Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing, the American Medical Informative Association, and the Journal of Medical Information Research.
