Biography
Shagun Jhaver’s research focuses on improving user-algorithm interactions on digital platforms. He critically examines how the design, technical affordances, and policies of large-scale platforms influence the experiences of different stakeholders. His work also aims to instill fairness and transparency in platforms’ communications with end-users. He uses a mixed-methods approach to accomplish this, combining large-scale data analyses, surveys, system building, interviews, and focus groups.
Before joining Rutgers, Jhaver was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Washington. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech where he was supervised by Prof. Amy Bruckman and Prof. Eric Gilbert. Jhaver has published his research in top-tier human-computer interaction and computing venues, including Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW), Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (TOCHI), and the International AAAI Conference On Web and Social Media (ICWSM), as well as in the communication venues like New Media & Society and Social Media + Society. His work has received multiple Best Paper and Honorable Mention Awards at CSCW and ICWSM. Jhaver has received funding for his research from the National Science Foundation.
Jhaver’s work lies at the intersection of Social Computing, Human-Computer Interaction and Data Science. He is currently examining how search engine users perceive the outputs of search autocompletes . He is studying the accessibility challenges of visually impaired users when using social media sites. He is also identifying support-seeking practices of people in inter-caste relationships on Reddit.
