Ece Gumusel

Ece Gumusel’s research examines usable privacy and security in contextual, time-sensitive sociotechnical systems, with a focus on the human, organizational, and regulatory dynamics that shape emerging technologies. Using interdisciplinary mixed-method approaches, her work investigates privacy decision-making and technology governance to develop human-centered frameworks for trustworthy technology. Her work has appeared in leading venues, including ACM CCS, PLSC, TPRC, NDSS USEC, iConference, JASIST, and ASIS&T. She is also an Affiliate of the Ostrom Workshop at Indiana University.

Gumusel teaches information policy, integrating technical, legal, and societal perspectives to prepare students to address contemporary privacy and security challenges. In her postdoctoral role at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she recently received the Facilitating Learning Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding teaching.

Gumusel is co-editor of the forthcoming "Governing Artificial Intelligence as Knowledge Commons" (Cambridge University Press), an interdisciplinary volume examining the governance of AI. Her current research includes projects on AI governance, usable privacy, and human-centered security. Her long-term goal is to develop theories and evidence-based approaches that improve privacy decision-making and governance in complex sociotechnical systems.
