September 30, 2026: MI Colloquium: Responsible AI For Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming healthcare, from clinical documentation and patient communication to diagnosis, decision support, and population health. These systems hold great promise, but they also raise important questions about privacy, fairness, bias, trust, and accountability. 

In this MI Colloquium, Professor of Library and Information Studies Vivek K. Singh will explore responsible Al for healthcare through the lens of human-centered design and behavioral informatics, drawing on his recent work, including: 

• Reducing stigma in healthcare: using Al to detect and address stigmatizing language in electronic health records (EHRs). 
• Advancing equity: developing fairness-aware approaches to improve health outcomes, such as in skin cancer detection. 
• Evaluating safety and trust: examining risks and vulnerabilities in Al health systems, including how large language models respond to health-related queries. 

About the speaker 

Vivek K. Singh is a Professor at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information and Director of the Behavioral Informatics Lab. His research focuses on human-centered AI systems that support health and well-being while safeguarding fundamental values such as privacy, fairness, transparency, and dignity. Through interdisciplinary work spanning artificial intelligence, health informatics, and behavioral science, he investigates how data-driven technologies can be designed to serve diverse populations responsibly and equitably. His research has been published in leading venues including JAMIA, JMIR, and Science.
