Journalism and Media Studies Speaker Series

With news documenting the uncertain status of a new collective bargaining agreement in the WNBA, the rise of new professional leagues in the US and abroad, and the constantly shifting college landscape, there is so much to unpack within women’s basketball today. In her book, Double Crossover: Gender, Media, and Politics in Global Basketball, Dr. Courtney M. Cox moves behind the headlines and hot takes, offering new perspectives in the sport after following athletes and advocates of women's basketball for ten years.

Meet the Speaker: Dr. Courtney M. Cox Dr. Courtney M. Cox is an Associate Professor in the Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies (IRES) at the University of Oregon. Her research examines issues related to identity, technology, and labor through sport and wine. Her book, Double Crossover: Gender, Media, and Politics in Global Basketball considers how Black women and nonbinary athletes maneuver through the global sportsmedia complex. She is also co-director (with Dr. Perry B. Johnson) of The Sound of Victory, a multi-platform project located at the intersection of music, sound, and sport. She previously worked for ESPN, Longhorn Network, NPR-affiliate KPCC, and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks
