I've been working on taking less medications.
Also trying to take the lest harmful meds I can. If that's possible. I took dorvicet for 17 yrs with very high mgs of tylenol. Six months ago I switched to Ultram to stop taking tylenol. I've also cut my Neurontin usage in half. I take Ultram, Neurontin, Baclofen, and Detrol la. (gotta have that) Which of these would be the most beneficial for me to cut back on, or switch to something else? Any help will be appreciated. I'm trying to find a physiatrist. No luck any where near me yet. Mona

In my opinion...I would get off of the Neurontin. I became very suicidal on that med...and as soon as I stopped it, I was back to normal. Of course, everyone reacts to meds in different ways...so the answers you are going to get will not be from an objective opinon.

Hi Mona,
I think you are asking so really good questions, but I also think that some meds work far better for some people than others. I took Neurontin for quite awhile, and unlike Wheeliecoach, I never felt suicidal when on it. Ultram was described to me as one of the safest out there, but it only lasted a couple of years and then seemed to lose its effectiveness for me, necessitating morhine sulphate to deal with my pain. Good luck and I hope you find a psysiatrist (or pharmacologist) to answer your questions. |

Thanks wheelicoach. It hasn't bothered me that way.
Sorry it did you. I am trying to stop it though. It makes me sleepy. Which I can't stand. Thanks Eileen, I switched to ultram after you & others said it was better. No tylenol that is. I only take 150 mg a day. I don't have much pain. I hope I find one close too. I have a number to call Monday. Mona

Mona,
I had to take my meds into my on hands. They had me on so much stuff that I didn't need. I would take my doses and pass out in my wc. They automatically put me on baclofin but I never had a spasm. High doses of Neurotin plus all kinds of others. Now I'm down to 400mg's of Neurotin and 20mg's of Baclofin 4 times a day and thats all compared to the other 5 meds they had me on. I do have 10mgs Loritabs I take when the pain is real bad but it has the lowest dose of Tylenol. When I was in collage the teacher told us that Tylenol was one of the worst, especially for children. Now they have Ibuprofen and others. Yes, use your common sense when it comes to meds because the Dr's will put you on all kinds of stuff. They say, let's try this and see how it works. I know they mean well but there comes a time when you know your on body. Mary

Hi Mona,
I'm on 3200mgs (4x8) of gabapentin (Neurontin) a day and I'm no more suicidal than usual! Without the gabapentin I'd be in severe pain, it works for me.It seems as though they like to put acetaminophen (Tylenol) in practically everything. Hope you can get things sorted out. Bob.

Thanks Mary,
I agree 17 yrs taking the maximum tylenol allowed. I feel like a dummy. I don't know why I did it. But you're right they try to keep you doped up. Mine put me on amitriptilene (msp) and I ran into the wall & knocked my big toenail off & never knew it. At the Nursing Home they wanted you comatose. Poor residents ![]() I've been taking 20 mg x 6 times a day for 17 yrs, but I've almost got me weaned to 4 times a day. You never spasmed? I did and asked for medicine but not so much I never spasmed. Now my legs are atrophyed & have no tone. But you're right I'm working on doing it my way. That's good Bob. I've never felt even sad on it. Thanks for the support! Mona
