ICing questions
Well, it's been about a year now and I am still trying to learn things. We went to see a phyistrist (sp?). I mentioned to him that daughter can urinate a little on her own, then she self caths. But, how do we know if and when she is going on her own enough? He suggested getting a "hat" to measure. I'm still trying to find one. My emabarrasing dumb question is. Is she going to have transfer to toilet and "go" on her own, transfer back to chair, measure it, transfer back to toilet and cath, transfer back to chair (final time at least) and see the final results? Maybe once I see the urine collection "hat" I can figure out another way. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure she is ready to quit IC, as occas. she will leak. She'll go weeks at a time doing great, than occas. a leak. |

Hi,
I understand your predicament-it sounds very labor intense. I am not totally sure hwat a hat is but I thik you're referring to a urine collection bowl-type that bits onto the toilet, collects and measure urien. If you choose the hat, you could consider a commode, where you could access the hat from the bottom while she stays on the commode. My questions is though, couldn't they perform urodynamic studies where they can see more scientifically how her emptying is? Has she ever had one? Google this term if you need further information. I asked the Dr. about a urnodynamics test. I can't remember his reasoning for not wanting to do one. Her reeval in Feb. at Craig Rehab, all the urlogist told us was she had a healthy bladder.

HI, We used a hat when my son was both cathing and voiding. Our urologist gave us one at his office and we bought another one at a surgical supply pharmacy near the local hospital. It goes on the toilet bowl between the bowl and the seat. It has a measurement grid right on the inside so you can see the amount by just looking at it. She can void right into it from the toilet then either try to take a look at the amount and then just cath right in or (what we did) have her cath into a urinal ( I know usually for males) I don't think she needs to do all those transfers, at least that's how we did it. Keep track of the amounts and total. You'll be able to figure out how well she is emptying her bladder. Our urologist said he could stop cathing when residuals were less than 80cc. consistantly. he is now 1 1/2 years post and has urodynamics test every six months. It provides alot of information about how the bladder is functioning. Unpleasant test that was very helpful. I don't understand what your daughters md means by she has a "healthy bladder" because it is not really the bladder causing the probllem it is the spinal cord. Unless he meant no UTI? Good luck with all this. It sounds like your daughter is improving. I hope that she is doing well. Nancy

I think no UTI's or stones is what he meant. The best darn place like Craig, who is to question? We have a lot to learn still.
Thanks Nancy for replying. The "hat" sounds easy enough if she is able to see it while sitting. She uses a urinal in the middle of night if needed. Most nights she doesn't need to go. But for a girl, a urinal & upright on the toilet, not enough hands for a girl.
