Gilbert senior point guard Tommy Hambicki still had no feeling in his legs three days after surgery to alleviate pressure on his spinal cord.
Hambicki, who led Gilbert to its first Class 5A boys basketball championship three weeks ago, broke the 11th vertebra in a car accident on his way home from Puerto PeƱasco, Mexico, last Thursday. He underwent five hours of surgery Friday. Bones from Hambicki's hip were taken to fuse the vertebra, and a rod was inserted for stability.
Doctors felt good about the surgery, said coach Tom Bennett, who has made daily visits to Hambicki.
"Now it's a matter of waiting and hoping," Bennett said. "We just have to pray for some good things."
