Fast track to recovery for jawans soon
Express New Service Pune, February 16: THE Military Hospital at Khadki is all set to introduce new systems of spinal fixation for paraplegic and tetraplegic army jawans for a speedy recovery. Titanium screws and rods will replace the old Harrington system at the largest orthopaedic and spinal cord injury centre in South-East Asia. It has been the pioneer joint replacement centre of the Indian Army. The first joint replacement in the Indian Army was carried out in this hospital as long back as 1981, Colonel K R Salgotra, Senior Advisor (Surgery & Orthopaedics) at the hospital told The Indian Express. The centre specialises in management of orthopaedic trauma and spinal injuries and over 1,500 soldiers and their dependents have been rehabilitated with several even winning medals in paralympics, national and international games. It takes almost four months to a year for the soldiers to recover. However, the new system will lessen the time taken to rehabilitate them, Col Salgotra said, adding that it also depended on the nature of the injury. The soldiers, after their rehabilitation, are also sent to the Queen's Mary Technical Institute for making them self-dependent and exposing them to various courses. The hospital has several upgradation plans including the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme to get underway on March 8 and 9 on newer trends in arthroplasty and trauma care. A host of speakers from all over India will participate. Write to the Editor http://cities.expressindia.com/fulls...?newsid=43968# |
