indwelling and condom catheters
just a question. my husband is 1 year 6 months post injury. t7 complete. he used to use condom catheters at night but they would never stay on and i was constantly changing sheets and chucks and clothes. so about 8 or so months ago he started using an indwelling at night which solved that problem. he wanted to start using a condom catheter again because the other we think was giving him frequent uti's. we tried one last week and nothing came out all night (about 12 hours). i got scared so made him put the indwelling back in. so my question is...is the condom catheter not going to work anymore since he's been using an indwelling at night?
thanks, stephanie |

I would not worry about that, not going all night thing. When I was injured I wore the condom cath all the time and I would sometimes not have anything come out at night, esp if I did BM right before bed. All that pressure pushing out the back made all seem to come out the front and I frequently had no urine in bag. I was able to train my bladder, in my opinion, in this way. I no longer need cath, in or out. That is just what happened with me.

Hi,
Sometimes it takes a short period for one's bladder to get back to using a condom catheter. The most important thing is that his bladder is emptying properly and this can be told htrough urodynamic studies. The indwelling will drain the bladder wihtout much help needed from the muscles of the bladder. But if you are using a condom catheter, this requires that the bladder sphincter and muscles are working to drain and empty the bladder. If not adequately drained, urine is retained and sets one up for UTI's. If the condom cath is staying on and still not draining in adequate amounts based on your fluid intake, I would speak with your urologist. AAD |

if his bladder was really full when he put the indwelling back in then he was probably retaining urine.
