Police Shoot Man In Wheelchair
Officers Say Man Was Shot With His Own Gun Posted: 6:54 a.m. EST December 31, 2002 Updated: 12:18 p.m. EST December 31, 2002 MIAMI -- A man in a wheelchair was shot by Miami police officers Monday after they reportedly responded to a call about a wheelchair-bound man dealing drugs. That call brought Miami officers to Northwest 27th Street and 15th Avenue where they found a man in a wheelchair. Miami police said that they approached Ivan Rosario, 30, and after getting his permission, they searched a backpack belonging to him. Officers said that they found several bags of marijuana in the bag, and advised Rosario that he was under arrest. Officers said that Rosario attempted to flee in his wheelchair. According to the arresting officer, Rosario then stopped and reached into his jacket for a gun. The officer said that he grabbed for the weapon, and during the struggle for the gun, the Rosario fired his gun at least three times. The officer was not hit by the gunfire. The officer said he was then able to pull his own weapon, and fired at Rosario, reportedly striking him in the arm. "The man who had occupied that wheelchair had been hit. Now we found a gun and narcotics on the scene and the man who was hit was struck in one of his arms," said Lt. Bill Schwartz (pictured). Rosario was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was admitted in good condition. Copyright 2002 by Click10.com. All rights reserved.
