Dr. Young - Can you tip off OPRAH on Kevin Everett's recovery?

OPRAH is featuring Everett, his doctor, and his 'miraculous recovery' on Thursday, January 31, 2008.

I'm not an expert, but I refer to Dr. Young's 9/25/2007 letter on FOOTBALL, SCI....... in which he says Everett had central cord syndrome and that nearly 100% of people with central syndromes recover walking.

My concern is the public will conclude between the methylprednisolone and cooling, we have 'the cure', and money for stem cell and other research will decrease. /// maybe not, maybe this will be a boost.

What do you think?

NPR has also had 2 programs along the same line.

JN,

I think that you are overestimating my influence over people like Oprah.

Wise.

Wise vs Oprah!

You underestimate yourself - you have the power of Christopher R! I'm smiling, thanks for all you do!

I trust that his doctor will use the opportunity to set the record straight. They've gone out of their way to do so in recent articles.

I am willing to almost guarantee you that this will not happen. Oprah is in he business of ratings, and what everyone wants to hear is "triumph over adversity" ala a Rocky Balboa scenario. I am not taking anything away from Kev Ev, but the story that is going to be spun will probably upset everyone on this board. If not, I'll come back to this post and apologize.

Everette will be on that show with his physician, he won't be alone, and Oprah can't make his physician say anything he doesn't want to say. Everette's entire medical team has been distancing themselves from the initial reports crediting the hypothermia for his recovery. I doubt if a doctor from that same team will be doing a 180. Their reputations are on the line.

I don't know if Kevin will get the message, but I emailed the Buffalo Bills office requesting that they (Kevin and his doctor) not mislead the American people into believing that a "cure" is here and available to all future victims of SCI. All we can do is keep out fingers crossed and hold our breath!

I personally doubt it even matters. I doubt anyone takes it that seriously. people will watch the show and by the time its over they will forget all about everything they just saw. you may get a few mis informed comments but as a whole the able body community isn't really hanging on the edge of there seat for a cure for sci. all they really wanna see is a feel good story, its entertainment...

Sadly, I think you're exactly right Eric.

Wise.
This IS a major part of our problem as a country.
I don't watch Oprah..but anyone with such influence over masses of people NEED to get the facts as close to the truth as possible..not just go onto another show. I doubt if Oprah has the education to make a decision herself on what is the truth when it comes to neuroscience. But I may be wrong.
