question
Hi, I have a quick question. I have a friend who is a C-5 quadriplegic. Their injury was an incomplete so they do have some feeling but it is patchy. The only muscle they have total control over though is their biceps. They recently stood for several minutes. This is incredible because it allows more blood to flow to the legs, muscles to strengthen, etc. The family and my friend, however, believe it is hopes for a cure from the disability. Does anyone have any insight about this? I would like to be able to encourage them in the best way possible and know how to help them encourage my friend to reach his full potential but to not feel like they are a failure if they don't end up walking again. Any advice you can offer would be great!!

Given what you are telling me about his injury, I am not sure that your friend has an incomplete injury. But either way, it is important to keep hope alive. There is so much research going on that it is not only possible, but highly possible that a cure may come along in the not so distant future.
However, in order to utilize whatever technology comes along, I believe that it is important to keep yourself healthy. That includes exercising those muscles that may not be working too well, standing on those bones that don't get to have much weight put on them and generally keeping the rest of you healthy. I also strongly encourage people to get out there and live. Sitting around waiting for the cure is not healthy from a psychological standpoint and is also downright boring, in my opinion. CKF |
