You know what, two good multi's in the morning and a decent chewable probiotic went further than the green source.

I would say avoid more sugary foods. I have no evidence other than anecdotal.

You also need more salt if you drink lots of water.

UTI troubles

I am posting this for my SCI (T1) friend Dallas Dietrich who is having the UTI issues. His original injury was from a car accident, he was diagnosed with a T 6-7 injury and post traumatic syringomyeloengoalia (sp) the cyst decended all the way to conus and ascended to T1. He had eight surgeries to stop the progression. The last surgery was in 2004 was a success.

Dallas has had seven UTIs in the last year. They were not an issue before this, but now the situation is getting more serious as the bacteria are becoming difficult to kill off. His current cultured bug is Enterococcus Faecalis which has become resistant to cipro and amoxicillin is not producing any positive results, but urologist says to finish regimen and check culture on monday. Dallas states "My body is telling me the drugs aren't working, I feel lower back pain, pain in legs and feet, with increase in spasms, and no energy An infectious disease MD will consulted with hopefully within the next twenty-four hours.

For starters we wanted to share a little of Dallas' cath care/technique and his history.

to clean catheters
Boil 45 catheters for 10-15 minutes
Divide into 3 ziploc bags
used as needed
Prior to cathing hands are washed with standard soft soap, followed by hibclense.
End of penis is wiped off with hibclense prior to insertion.
Should a urethra clensing technique be used?
Afterwards catheter is rinsed and put in ziploc bag until ready for mass boiling again.
Use purell throughout day.
Cathing 4-5 times a day.

MEDICATIONS
Baclofen
Nurotin
Calcium
Phosomax
Cranberry + Vit C 1680 mg + 100 mg 2 capsules x3/day
Vit C powder 5000 mg (started May, 17th)
Vit E 1000 IU
One A Day multivitamin for men

CT SCAN March 23, 2010
Negative for stones. Clear in both kidneys and bladder.

GALL BLADDER March 31, 2010
gallstone present. Recommended gall bladder removal.

Fluid intake= 1 liter/day
should increase to 2 liter/day

Questions
Urethra clensing?
Vitamin C dosing?
Wound on toe a year ago treated with Zyvox- MRSA identified, coincidence with reocurring UTIs?
cultured urine vs symptomatic UTI to treat or not to treat with antibiotic??
Pressure test, what is it?? related to bladder and UTIs
one time use catheters and the benefits?
Apple cider vinegar combo??
Gloves while cathing?
Is UTI secondary to other SCI complications or other bodily malfunctions not being treated?
Where to locate nearest SCI urologist MD?(We live in the Black Hills of South Dakota)
Are there preventative antibiotics to be used against UTIs? (Bactrim? or others?)
Are Uroqid-Acid No. 2, D-mannose, and creme of Tartar recommended for UTI prevention?
Probiotic usage, do I need to begin a course of probiotics?

Thank you all for any advice/information/suggestions that you can offer.

I go with powderless gloves for handling catheter. I buy them a case at a time and store the ones I will use in a ziplock.

Caleb, I suspect the problems start with reusing catheters. Insurance, including Medicare, will pay for a new catheter for each use. Why is Dallas still reusing old caths?

medicare pays for up to 200 catheters per month, so there is no need to reuse catheters anymore for those who IC.

i have a suprapubic catheter and since i've been taking a bactrim once a day i have beem UTI free for around 4 months

Get Bard touchless catheter kits. They are either rubber or vinyl and come with everything you need - glove, povadine swabs, etc.

Also, start the Vizoquid acid (generic uroquid) ASAP.

http://www.umponline.com/

They accept whatever Medicare pays as 100%, no out-of-pocket copay!
