suggestions for LCD monitor

I dabble in the web design realm and am currently using a pretty high-end Iiyama 21" CRT. I'm perfectly satisfied with it except for the fact that it is taking up too much space on my desk.

I will be asking Santa Clause for a new LCD this year and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions off hand. I'm basically looking for a professional quality 19 - 22" LCD monitor. I don't do any print work so it doesn't have to be on the highest end for color accuracy (on screen vs. printed). This may be a bit of a pipe dream but I'd also like to keep it in the <$500 range...

I'm in the process of researching now but thought I'd check in here for some possible starting points.

Thanks!

Look up the Samsung 226BW. You should be able to find it in the low $300s.

There's definitely more informed people around here than me when it comes to computers, but I love my Acer's. I've been using them for a couple years now. Started with one 24 inch AL series at home. After doing a lot of reading on the LCD monitors and comparing numbers, I decided to go with a larger Acer. Rather than a smaller Samsung. I was real happy with it for video games, AutoCAD and Solid Works use. Now I've got a 22 inch X. series to go with that one at home and two 22 inch AL series at work.

good luck

thanks guys. I appreciate the input. Any more suggestions?

Also, I'm assuming that since I'm getting a nice new monitor, I should also upgrade my Radeon X300 video card as well?

Any suggestions here? I do zero gaming and do not watch much video. Just a lot of Photoshop, Illustrator and some 3D Studio Max

Start with the monitor. If you find you need a new video card, then add that later.

I'm in the same boat as you: zero gaming, but I use Photoshop daily. I use an Apple LCD, but have been very impressed w/ the upper-end Samsungs. I have a friend w/ two of the 24" versions of the 226BW & they're fantastic.

Other suggestions? None from personal experience. I've seen some nice Dell displays & have heard good things about some of their stuff. Ask Google.

If you need a better quality screen for colors, Dells are said to be near top of the list but with an okay price.

If having near CRT screen color doesn't matter, get any averaged price, 2-300 for a 20-22" and you'll be happy.

Dave ... I am using Viewsonic monitors. Just made the switch this fall from a professional high end SONY 21" CRT and I am really impressed.

At home I use the ViewSonic® VP2130b 21.3" LCD. I am very impressed with this high end ViewSonic and have two that I use for photoshop and research. Details is imoportant and I find them amazing.

My son's a MAC user and has a mid-level priced ViewSonic 22" VX2255wmb widescreen LCD which spurred me to look at the ViewSonic monitors when I started looking for a new monitor this fall.

We are both very, very happy with these monitors and they get heavy use in all areas from email to Photoshop to video playback. Mine came with three year manufacturer warranties. Cheers, William

The high-gamut 24" Dell LCD's are supposed to be pretty good.
