Fraud defendant dead, judge tells jury

ST. LOUIS -- A federal judge today sent the jury home in the fraud case of Gateway to a Cure founder Lou Sengheiser and said that Sengheiser was dead.

The jury had begun its deliberations on Wednesday on allegations that Sengheiser had used funds from his spinal cord injury charity to pay personal debts such as mortgage payments and credit card bills.

No further information on Sengheiser's death was immediately available.

"The charity should have been called Help Me Help Myself," prosecutor Mike Reap said in his closing argument. "This man is not believable."

That statement cuts right to the point.

Killed himself cuz he was guilty as hell. God grant peace to his family...they'll need it.

That operation smelled shady. I came across it as I was looking to publicize the first rally. Read that website, thought "This makes no sense, financially" and bypassed it. Just seemed better to not be affiliated. I'm VERY surprised anyone donated to them.

I met Lou Senheiser once. In fact, I have a plastic Gateway to Cure award from when I attended one of their functions with Christopher Reeve in St. Louis. That was when John McDonald and I had dinner with Christopher in St. Louis.

When I was there, I was told that the money would go to Washington University. The raffle was really quite impressive. I remember that the top prize was some house and the second prize was a big SUV. He somehow had the Dallas Cowgirls standing outside the fundraiser giving everybody a big hello, hug, and kiss of the cheeks.

According to the prosecutor, total charitable donations of $38,325 were made out of $1,930,160 raised in four raffles (Source). By the way, Lou Sengheiser has a spinal-injured son, Jason Sengheiser who was injured in 1994. (Source).

It's not right to speak ill of the dead, so I suppose I'm going to refrain from saying what I think.

Wish I'd known about that function.

It's been a big day for the courts in St Louis. In a retrial, they also convicted a guy who murdered a cop 2 years ago.

Did you get a hug Dr. Young? I might have gone back for seconds.
