Fibercon

I need to get on a fiber regime. Does anyone else use fibercon and can it be used long term? I am a 4-5 complete so is this good for me?

Fibercon is one of the more expensive bulk agents, and in my experience works better in making your stool more formed. It can actually cause constipation for some. I would recommend instead getting at least 30 gm. of fiber in your daily diet. If you cannot do that, then Metamucil or Citrucel or Benefiber would probably be better. Get the generics, and follow the directions for use. You must take them with plenty of water.

I take the Citrucel tabs and they work well for me. I take 1/day but you can take quite a bit more if necesary...

I use Benefiber. I have used Miralax in the past but it aggravated my IBS. And I have issues with minor prolapses. Anyway, the little secret I learned was...don't add too much fiber too fast! It will have the opposite effect. It took a little while to experiment and found what worked best for me and really it is about a 1/4 tsp and LOTS of water (I take pain meds too). Anyway, it works great for me and now I am like clockwork...every morning. And...according to my Urogyn...LOTS of water is key and to TRY to keep things going every day. So, far so good. I would just say...start low...even with cereal. I made that mistake too...too much too soon. Because when the docs said to increase the fiber...I did! But, oh boy, I should have gone a lot slower.

I use the generic Metamucil. It's a lot cheaper and works just as well. I can tell when I forget to use it. I try to remember to take it around the same time every day.

I use four teaspoons of the very, very generic ground flaxseed. Natures answer to the need for regularity.

I have used generic fibercon for quite a while. Can't do with out it or I would have diarrhea. Never tried the other stuff. If I have to drink it, no way but I might try the other that comes in a pill.

Mary, for your situation I would stick with the generic Fibercon. Those other bulk agents don't have the firming action that Fibercon does, and are much more likely to just make your stool softer (more accidents) and sticky.

My stools have been kind of loose lately, so I started taking generic Fibercon. The first two days I took one at night, then the third day I took one in the morning, too. I thought the first day I did my bp it was helping, now today when I did my bp, it was sooo sticky I couldn't get it to come out. When I got dressed and ready to go to work, I had an accident. So, I got back on the commode and did some more dig stim, but it was still sticky and not much would come out. Do you think I should keep taking the Fibercon and hope that it will get harder or stop altogether?
Thanks!

apple/day + a bowl of frosted mini wheats the day before + decent hydration helped me more than supplements ever did... just FYI.

don't neglect nutrition.
