Help
This weekm after much prodding after my Orthepedic doctor, I got him to do an MRI after he found a small broken bone in my shoulder. It appears that in my neck I have two herniated dics in my neck. My HMO sent me back to my regular doctor to reveal the MRI and it will be almost a month before I see my Orthepedic physician again. I am in a great deal of pain, and my regular HMO doc doesn't believe in giving out pain pills. I don't sleep nights, and sometimes ponder going to the ER. Is this a wise idea?

Is it possible for you to see another doctor? You deserve to receive treatment for pain.

do you think your primary doc is really a good one for you?i mean do you feel he has always had your best interest at heart most times since you started seeing him?that is what you really need to ask yourself.if the answer is no,then it really would be time to possibly move onto another primary who does care.has he offered you ANY type of good suggestions or other med options to at least try and control your pain to some degree?these are all the things you need to really look at in evaluating your primary doc.pain from herniations can be brutal at times and others not too bad.the fact that you actually have a real fracture in your shoulder that he is refusing to manage properly, well, like i said, you have to really look at this docs overall practices to really see if he truely is the best 'fit' for your needs at this point.seriously, does he not think you are actually experiencing pain from these two issues or what?when my herniated disc was driving me insane(i had been living on aleeve just to get thru work and life)i finally had the opportunity to see my primary and have an x ray taken of it just to see what was goimg on in there structurally.after he told me my neck literally looked like a train wreck(the way the cars kind of go zig zag off the tracks?)we immediately discussed pain treatment options while we were setting up my MRI.we knew i had a herniated c 6-7 but not what was actually going on underneath yet in my cord(that big surprise came after the MRI).but he was more than happy to try and relieve at least some of my very real pain with narcotic pain meds and still taking my aleeve.
your primary possibly has been 'burned" before by someone who was abusing their pain meds or just doesn't want to do the paperwork in the documentaion for the need for narcotics.it is a liability for any doc to just write an Rx for narcotics.he could just not like to do this for many reasons.the only big problem is you,the patient who is not getting appropriate pain management of some very real issues that just can cause real pain.you DO deserve to have your pain addressed and given something to try and make life a bit more tolerable.you have documented reasons for having pain, for him to not want to help you with this in any real way just is not right.i would seriously try and find a much more knowledgable and caring doc.when someone is in an actual 'holding pattern' and waiting for surgery,i mean come on,you DO deserve better management of your pain til that actually occurs. i would not go to the ER unless your pain really becomes intolerable.but if you just cannot deal with it,then go.the big thing here is if you have to even contemplate having your pain managed at an ER,just basic pain care.your doc is NOT doing his job properly.you shouldn't have to resort to this extreme for something your doc should have been doing all along in order to avoid this.i would try and find a doc who actually cares about their patients suffering.i wish you lots of luck with this and hope you can move on to a different doc.this one quite obviously dosen't give a rats ass if his patients are suffering in pain.please keep us posted,Marcia |
