Stem Cell Ruling Could Focus Funding on Treatments
by Dr. David Prentice and David Christensen 09/07/2010 U.S. District Court Chief Judge Royce C. Lamberth agreed on August 23 with two adult stem cell scientists, Drs. James Deisher and Theresa Sherley, who filed suit to block federal taxpayer funding of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research, which they argued violated current federal law and caused them irreparable harm by restricting funding for adult stem cell research. Judge Lamberth's preliminary injunction halts federal taxpayer funding of hESC research. While the mainstream press and scientific elite have responded with horror, the ruling actually benefits patients seeking treatments. If the decision stands, it should free up millions more dollars for the types of stem cell research—adult stem cells—that are increasingly treating diseases previously thought untreatable, including diabetes and spinal cord injury. How is it that the federal government funded something illegal? The judge ruled that in funding hESC research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) violated a 1996 law named (after the congressional sponsors) the Dickey-Wicker amendment. The amendment, first passed during the Clinton Administration, prohibits research funding that involves destroying or harming human embryos. more... http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=38837 |

NIH resumes stem cell funding
The National Institutes of Health announced Friday that it has resumed funding human embryonic stem cell research. The announcement came in response to a ruling Thursday by a federal appeals court temporarily lifting a temporary injunction that had been issued by a federal judge barring the funding read... http://voices.washingtonpost.com/che...l_funding.html |

Stem cell funds get reprieve but may be little help
Appeals court suspends injunction Pete Yost Associated Press WASHINGTON – The government may resume funding of embryonic stem cell research for now, an appeals court said Thursday, but the short-term approval may be of little help to research scientists caught in a legal battle that has just begun. It is far from certain that scientists actually will continue to get federal money as they struggle to decide what to do with research that is hard to start and stop. After U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth issued a preliminary order barring the funding on Aug. 23, the National Institutes of Health suspended work on funding new research projects on embryonic stem cells. While NIH didn’t immediately comment Thursday on the temporary stay from the appeals court, the government’s process for approving these grants is unlikely to resume before a final court resolution. With appeals, that could be many months off. read.... http://www.spokesman.com/stories/201...-get-reprieve/ |

Wisdom teeth could be stem cell source
Washington, Sep 11 (ANI): Is wisdom teeth just an annoyance for you? Well, its time to change your opinion, for according to researchers, wisdom teeth contain a valuable reservoir of tissue for the creation of stem cells. Buzz up!This means that everyone might be carrying around his or her own personal stem-cell repository in case of need. A team of scientists at Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology may have found an ideal source of induced-pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells)- third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth. read... http://news.oneindia.in/2010/09/11/w...ellsource.html |

Alanis touted stem cell therapy
By Elaine Ayala - Express-News Web Posted: 09/11/2010 12:00 CDT Dr. David Alanis, a San Antonio-born physician who practiced sports medicine and pain management and was an alumnus of Central Catholic High School and St. Mary's University, died Aug. 22 of heart failure. He was 53. Alanis had undergone adult stem cell therapy in Costa Rica to prolong his life. His mother and sister, who also suffered from heart disease, preceded him in death. At the time of his death, Alanis was living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where he assisted physicians doing cleft palate surgeries on indigent patients. He was the son of the late Dr. Artemio A. Alanis, a Monterrey, Mexico-born internal medicine physician who practiced in San Antonio, and Maxine Richards, who died at 23, when her son was just a toddler. Alanis' sister Elizabeth Alanis, a registered nurse, died five years ago at 44. Artemio Alanis married again after his first wife's death. Sylvia B. Alanis was a registered nurse, and the couple had eight more children. read... http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/loc...102673799.html |

There is plenty of evidence in this thread to support the idea that effective stem cell therapies are on the way for a variety of conditions. This story is a reminder that it is easy to get suckered in to inappropriate treatments when you are desperate to be cured.

Stem cell summit to make a case for more research BY CAROL CAIN FREE PRESS COLUMNIST Get ready for an earful on embryonic stem cell research as the World Stem Cell Summit rolls into Detroit. More than 1,200 people are expected to gather for the Oct. 4-6 conference. It is to focus on adult and embryonic stem cell research and other regenerative medical issues. Sponsors say the timing is perfect with the national debate on embryonic stem cell research playing out in a federal court and Congress. At issue: what research to allow and what should be the federal government's role in subsidizing it. The controversy is over embryonic stem cell research. AstraZeneca joins UCL to find stem cell cure for diabetic blindness
AstraZeneca and UCL researchers look to use stem cells to repair eyesight in rising number of diabetic retinopathy patients Julia Kollewe guardian.co.uk, Sunday 12 September 2010 20.02 BST AstraZeneca and University College London (UCL) will announce a research partnership tomorrow to develop medicines that use stem cells to repair damaged eyesight in people with diabetes. Under the three-year deal funded by the drugmaker, researchers from AstraZeneca will team up with scientists at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology to work on new medicines that use the regenerative capacity of stem cells. They hope to come up with a compound in three to five years, which could then undergo clinical development and possibly be on the market in 10 years' time. Dr Marcus Fruttiger of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, who is leading the project, said: "These tools could be used either to manufacture transplantable material or to directly stimulate new cell growth in the eye to help restore or improve the vision of those with diabetic retinopathy [DR]." read... http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2...etes-blindness |
