During this time, it would be helpful to focus on calls to the following Reps. -
Charlie Dent R-PA Health Aide-Laura 202-225-6411 Frank Wolf R-VA Health Aide-Jillian Pevo 202-225-5136 John McHugh R-NY Health Aide-Mike Holland 202-225-4611

Vote on S 22 -- close but not quite
The final vote on S 22, the public lands bill that included CDRPA, fell two votes short of the 2/3 vote necessary to pass. It was much closer than anyone expected, which in a way makes it even more painful. But it is still a positive sign. I think the calls from ccers helped; at least one of the members who got a call today from a cc'er (Leo), Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, had concerns about other parts of the bill and hadn't decided how to vote as of this morning but ultimately voted for it and two of the three members IMHopeful mentioned above voted yes (Charlie Dent and Frank Wolf). The vote was 282-144, so if two votes had changed it would have passed 284-142. You can see how members voted here:
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll117.xml I am not sure what happens next, other people in my office are working on it. What I can tell you is that this bill and the items contained in it are getting a lot of attention and it isn't a matter of if we will get them done but when and how, with the answer on when being sooner rather than later. |

Tune in to CNN’s Larry King Live tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern!
Guest host, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, will interview Alexandra Reeve Givens and Reeve Foundation Chairman of the Board of Directors Peter Kiernan about President Obama’s executive order and its implications. Alexandra will discuss her father’s legacy and how she felt hearing the President deliver such an eloquent tribute to her father and stepmother.

Since the vote was so close there have already been several conversations about what changes could be made that would allow the bill to pass the House without causing too many problems in the Senate. From what I know, it sounds very encouraging. It will take a while longer, because if the House makes any changes the Senate will have to consider the bill again which could take some time, but the House won't make any changes without checking with the Senate to make sure the Senate can pass it again.

I'm not close enough to it to have a good list of potential swing votes, but my undersanding is that we got all of the potential Democratic votes on S 22 so the goal is to get a couple more Repubilcan votes. I think the best target group for CCers to contact would be Republicans who have cosponsored CDRPA this year or in the past but voted against S 22 yesterday to remind them that CDRPA is included in S 22 and the SCI community is paying attention to the votes on S 22.
