Help Me Find Best Place for Son's SCI Rehab

Can anybody give me an indication of their experience of a good rehab facility. My son is still in ICU with C6/C7 SCI. Is presently at PA, Queensland, Australia. I would like to find out whether this is the best place for him to be for rehab or should I look at moving him to somewhere better - private or state?

Moving to New Injury

Hi~ I am moving this to the new injury forum in the hopes that others will see it and respond.

I know that Dogger did his rehab at PA in Brisbane. He is currently on a plane headed for the states. Give him a day or so and I am sure he will pipe in.

Ananbanana and any other Ozzies can you please post.

My husband went to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. Fanrastic facility with, in our opinion, the best physical and occupational therapists. It's a facility strictly for neurological problems, but it seems to be mainly SCI patients. I would highly recommend it for him.

Rehab aimed at return of motor neuron function

Thanks for responding Guys- it is nice to know someone else is out there. Ben (22) is due to go down to acute on Monday. I have spoken to doctors who say that the rehab that they offer includes maintaining range of movement incase of a return of function but nothing aimed at encouraging motor neuron function. Is this the norm. Your website talks about using FES within first six weeks of injury. They only use the FES for certain patients and that is later down the track. Are there any rehab centres that focus on the return of motor neuron function as well as the use of remaining functions?

It would be good to know what Dogger went over to the States for and where he went to.

Dogger is about 16 years post injury. He is attending the Symposium and Rally in DC as well as getting care at Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore for a week.

Look up his name in Search and send him a private message. It will go to his email account. Try this link: http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/private...o=newpm&u=1401

I did my 11 months rehab at the PA starting June 05. No complaints. You don't really have much choice of places in Australia... PA is the only SIU for QLD, NT, and northern NSW. It's really good though- their TRP program is brilliant, especially if you're not from Brisbane [i was from Rocky]. Anything you want to know, email me dazonic@gmail.com

My son did his first intensive rehab at Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore. It is a fantastic place and he received 6 hours of therapy a day.He was inpatient. The building is older and not much to look at, but the therapy is outstanding. The doctor that runs the facility is Dr. John McDonald, who is the same doctor that treated Christopher Reeves and he also was the inventor of the Restorative Therapy FES bike.

Jiill.

It is good that you are open and searching for the best treatment possible. Dr.s, nurses and people who have lived with SCI offer support here. I moved my daughter, 16, SCI C/6 incomplete, post 2 years, from Shenton Park in Perth, Australia. I regret waiting seven months to do so. I have heard that there is a progressive place in New Zealand, but don't know if they use E-Stim. Shepards spealizes in young people and I know that Kennedy Kreiger does as well. My daughter did therapy at Kennedy Kreiger and thought highly of their program.

Rehab Choices

I am in the process of writing a book on my experience with spinal cord injury. I have just completed writing the chapter on rehabilitation hospitals in the US. Here is the information. I hope this helps. If you want to talk to me further, my email is cboyles@swbell.net. I can't tell you anything about rehabilitation from a personal perspective. I never had any rehabilitation. It took 6 weeks from the time of the accident until the doctors finally figured out I had a spinal cord injury.

There is a group of 16 facilities in the United States that are called Model System of Care facilities. These 16 facilities are the most progressive in their care of spinal cord injuries.

You haven't said (or I haven't seen) whether you are
willing/able to leave "Down Under", and travel to another
country (the USA, or other) for treatment.
