Bowel Program Frequency
Hello All,
I have been a C6 quad for 25 years and my bowel program has been a suppository (Magic Bullet) every other morning. Works fine.........no problem. My problem is that the older I get I have noticed that my "off day"...... when I don't take a suppository I feel kind of bloated and uncomfortable. I don't want to start taking a supppository everyday because it can be time consuming. Is there something I can do that will make my "off day" more bearable and pleasant ? I eat healthy, so I don't think there is anything in the diet that I can change, but maybe there is some kind of medication (IBS meds) that would give me some relief. Thanks. Ronnie |

In my experience, for those who are aging with their SCI and have problems such as this, the only really good way to resolve it is to go to a daily bowel program. Perhaps you could include some more information about your bowel program now (details) and what other meds you are taking so we could help.
This does not appear to be IBS, which usually results in diarrhea in people with SCI. (KLD) |

Ronnie, I'm a C6-7 quad for 27 years and I used to crap twice a week at first. Then I went to every other day about 10 yrs. Then just the past couple of years, I crap every day. Yes it is lost time, but the bloated feeling is gone and no more crapping off schedule. You should try every day and even use 1/2 a bullet to start. Works for me. Actually, I figure I've spent the equivalence of about 250 days taking a crap in 27 years. A sorry but necessary statistic indeed.

Hello Spinal Nurse,
Thanks for your reply.......I am 48 years old and from your experience it looks like it is just an age issue that happens to a majority of aging SCI. Yes, taking a suppository everyday is a remedy. I don't take any medications other then vitamins and the details of my bowel program are pretty straight forward. I take a suppository and wait 30 minutes and then go sit on the toilet. My lower rectal vault empties completely with good consistency and then I feel great. I am looking for a way to eliminate having to go everyday in order to feel good. Thanks. Ronnie |
