Quote from Friday Night Lights "your not comfortable living in the chair"

On last weeks Friday Night Lights episode when Jason was wondering why he did not make the team Hurc said “You might be the best athlete on the floor, but you will never be on the team until your comfortable in the chair” Now I know that both of these actors are AB but that line really hit home with me. I am just shy of five years living this new life and can honestly say I am still not comfortable living in a chair. So my question is this: What does it take to reach this goal? IF so how long did it take you to find this inner peace? I still find myself thinking of past memories when I go past some areas where I hunted or when I look at scrapbooks, I still weep maybe not daily but at least twice a week wondering why my life is the way it is. I don’t see myself as depressed; I just don’t see myself happy with my life at the present time; nor can I remember the last time I really did feel happy and the way I see it until that happens I will never be comfortable in the chair. Thanks for listening

I saw that episode too and thought it was a load of crap written by someone who has clearly never had to personallt deal with SCI. Some AB people just want those in chairs to "get over it" and "just be grateful for what you have". BS~ I'll never get used to or comfortable having to use a chair if for the simple reason that it makes AB people uncomfortable. Gimp an few miles/roll in my chair and THEN tell me how long it would take to "be comfortable.'

Hogwash!

I'm glad that the show doesn highlight some of the things that people with sci have to deal with, but the producers/writers come up with some of the most stupid things. There was an episode a while back where Jason Street is told he shouldn't get hot and heavy with his gf because it would lead to AD and he could get really sick.

Another attempt to asexualize those with SCI.

Hey Nevada, When I heard Hurc tell him that, I took it as having what drag racers, motorcyclists, race car drivers and the like call ''seat time''. I took no offense. He's still new to the whole rugby idea (and recent SCI). I know, I know, it's still not realistic to be playing rugby 2 or so months after this injury. I know I was sooo weak for months not days as this depicts, but your typical AB viewer is none the wiser.

I guess that I'm pretty comfortable at 4 1/2 post.. accepting is more like it. I too go past areas where I once rode and just reminisce.. I catch myself and try to block it out quickly so that it doesn't bring me down. I have been very successful.

Maybe not 2 months afterwards but I started playing 4 months after mine it was the best rehab I couldve gotten. Once I started pushing the rugby chair it was amazing how much strength I got so fast. My first game was 8 months post. But its very far fetched to have a National team tryout only a few months playing.

As for the comment I think he was referring to being comfortable in a rugby chair. Like him and the chair being "one". We used that saying alot when I raced bikes. If your not comfortable in the seat you have erratic movements.

I'm comfortable in my chair only 2 years post. I go to alot of race tracks to watch friends and reminisce it dont bother me one bit. Everyone cant believe how my attitude is but lifes to short you gotta move on and enjoy it while you can
