Exclamation T A X E S - Your Favorite Deductions...

I have mine done but I just want to hear what others deduct just so I'm not leaving any free money on the table.

Also, I find it interesting how the laws vary from state to state too on what you pay based on your injury. What state has the lowest tax rate?

Here in Canada we have the 6000 dollar disability tax credit which I transfer to my hubby since I don't pay taxes on my workers comp pension... means we get all our taxes back!

Since they have no state income tax Florida, Tennessee and Texas should have the lowest rate - ZERO!

Hmmm, off the top of my head:
  • All unreimbursed disability home-related expenses (e.g. new bed, shower chair, lift, home modifications)
  • PCA wages (we pay 100% out of pocket)
  • All costs related to our service dog - purchase of dog himself, his food, vet bills, trainer fees, vests, everything for him
  • Mileage to/from doctor visits
  • Obviously, any unreimbursed medical expenses (co-pays not covered by FSA funds, etc) - in this category I include things that we pay 100% of: blue pads, baby wipes, alcohol hand wash, plastic bags, etc.
I'm sure there is more, I'm just having a blank moment on the others. I'm doing our tax stuff (e.g. getting it ready to send to our accountant) this weekend, so I'll update if I think of more stuff.

And unrelated to SCI, I am celiac, and I can claim a tax deduction on the extra amount of money it costs for me to eat gluten free vs. a typical diet. It's not alot, but every little bit helps!

No special rates in Connecticut related to disability, although they are more lenient on SSDI. While I paid taxes on most of it for the feds, I did not for the state.

Like zilla stated, medical deductions include the obvious (co pays and such) but also mileage to/from drs, hospitals, pharmacies. Equipment and supplies not covered by insurance, home modifications,. I don't have a pca. Also included are any health and dental insurance payments, including the part deducted out of paychecks.

I'm sure you know this, but you can only claim insurance payments that are made post-tax. Ours are taken pre-tax so I can't claim those. But just FYI for anyone else who may want to take that deduction.

I'm a fan of the home office deduction (including percentages of utilities and other household bills).
