Pressure sore
I have a pressure sore on my right foot beneath my little toe. It is a stage 1 pressure sore i think because it is only discolored and there is no opened wound. It was caused by a rough spot in my shoe that i was unaware of. Thats the last time that happens, i will be checking my shoes everyday before putting them on from now on. We have ordered new shoes. My question is if i have new shoes would it be ok to wear them and just keep an eye on the sore or should i just wear no shoes until it is healed? Also if i keep all pressure off of it and get a good amount of protein how long does a stage 1 sore usually take to heal? Also if i werar shoes while trying to heal the sore will something like dr scholl's gel soles help? Does anyone wear these things and do they help prevent sores? Thanks for any help.

It's like a sore anywhere else, keep it dry, pressure off of it, and keep observing it.
Dr. Scholl's will actually hold moisture against the area, which is not a good thing in many cases. Can you keep your foot exposed and pressure off that area? If you are young, in generally good shape, don't smoke, and eat ballanced meals, it will heal in a couple days. |

No shoes. Soft slippers are OK, be sure you have no pressure from your wheelchair foot pedals (a common place for pressure). Gel pads are insufficient for pressure reduction.
If you keep all pressure off it, and it does not progress to a stage II (open) pressure ulcer it may resolve in 5-10 days. Inspect it twice daily, do not massage or put anything on or over the lesion. If it opens, see your physician right away as sores in this area can quickly progress to the bone. (KLD) |

I had a sore there. One thing I did was adjust my footpad heel loopes so the front half of my foot was forward of the footrest, therefore no pressure on the sore.
Good luck Jim |

Hey,
I just developed a couple of stage one pressure sores and was recommended that I use an air flow mattress on my bed and a cushion in my chair. In just a week I can see a great difference. The pressure areas are almost gone. If your doctor orders it your insurance may pay for it. The whole mattress is about the size of a twin bed and about an inch thick so it doesn't bother with my transfers. It has air flow chambers that move air throughout every three minutes. It's great and painless. Give it a try. As far as your foot. Don't wear the shoes until its gone ithey will only continue to put pressure on it. jai |

The spot on my foot is still there. It has faded a little but I am getting really irritated about it now. Its been 4 weeks and it is still a dark spot on my foot. My mom thinks its healed and she keeps saying the top layer of skin just needs to come off. So what i am wondering is will that top layer of skin peel off when it is healed or does the spot just return to normal color when it is healed. This is really nerve-racking. I am tired of wearing a slipper on that foot. Also should i not wear a sock on that foot until it is healed?

It could take a couple of months for the actual redness to go away. The main thing is to keep total pressure off that heal. Go to the medical supply house in your area and purchase a AIR SEAT CUSHION. it's about $25.00. It looks like a clear plastic cushion with waffles in it. Chambers of air. Keep this under your heal when ever your in a recliner or lying in bed. Your heal needs to remain pressure free until this redness is completely gone. The air chambers move and it keeps the blood from settling there. You can wear socks but not tight ones. Believe me these cushions really work in time. My son uses the flow air mattress on his bed too. He had a sore on his bottom so red it was about to open. This mattress completely cured it within two weeks. Everyone is different in healing time. They use them in the hospitals now every where. The key is you don't want that sore to advance to a stage 2 or three where it opens up. Then you really have problems because the circulation is poor and doesn't want to heal well. You can also use this cushion under your bottom while sitting in recliners or other chairs and it prevents sores to your butt. Be patient, use the cushion and heal up soon.

Oh, I forgot, you should not wear a shoe until you are healed. The shoe will cause immobility of the blood flow to the heal at this time. Any further questions email me at:
