Thanks for the advice - now I have more questions!

Hi and thanks for all the advice about my Dad's attitude in my previous post. I hoped for different answers but it's what I figured - it take a LONG time to adjust and accept the injury and new life. It seems like there are good people at this forum and I'm glad I found it.

One to my next questions:

First, my Dad is not wanting to eat or drink water despite the urging of family and Drs. I thought it was a control issue but he said tonight that he's afraid he's going to asperate (sp?). He thinks that water may go down the wrong tube and eating more when he feels full could cause him to gag and vomit. This seems far fetched but is this a valid fear?

Also, he's taking 20 medications - 4 anti-depressents, 2 anti-anxiety, 3 sleeping pills, 2 Muscle relaxer, stool softeners, laxatives, ect. Is this excessive???

Lastly, the poor man can't sleep! He hasn't has a restful night of sleep for 3 months. Is this normal or is it due to all the meds?

Sorry for so many questions but thanks again!

Just a guess but that seems like excessive meds. Why take 3 sleeping pills if you still can't sleep?

Can you get a list of all the drugs and dosages, and post it here?

I would say the meds are working against each other. That may be the reason for some of his behaviors.

If that were me... I would be passed out for months...

good luck

here's his list of meds:

Baclofen 30 mg - 3xday
Wellbutrin 1oomg
Celexa 40 mg
Colace 200 mg - 2 x day
Guaifenesin 600 mg - 4 x day
Magace 400 mg
Reglan 5 mg - 4 x day
Proamatine 5 mg -2 x day
Protonix 40 mg
Miralax 17 gm
Senokot S - 2 tabs- 2xday
Gas-X -80 mg
Vit C 250 mg - 3 x day
Peridex 15 ml - 2 x day
Hiprex 1 gram - 2 x day
Coumadin 7 mg
Dulcolax Supp 10 mg
Ativan .5 mg - 2 x day
Elavil 50 mg
Lunesta 2 mg
Remeron 30 mg
Ambien CR 12.5 mg

I saw this list and was amazed - my Dad never took anything but vitamins, asprin and the occasional ibuprfen. I know things are different post injury but it this all really necessary? I should mention too that he's 6 foot and right now, weights a whooping 127 lbs! Any suggestions? I am finding some comfort in knowing that next week he goes home and will be seeing his regular Dr. there and then hopefully will be referred to a specialist that has experiance with SCI. Maybe the new doc will change things around a bit......

Thanks!

I can't believe all those meds!!! I suspect that polypharmacy is a big part of your dad's problems. Schedule a meeting with his physician and ask that a clinical pharmacists be there at the same time. Go over each med and ask that they get rid of the duplicate purpose and useless ones (of example, Hiprex). He is on several that have the same effects...for example, there is rarely a reason to be on 3 different antidepressants, much less combined with antianxiety meds that can make depression worse or 3 different sleeping medications. The risks for drug-drug interactions are very high here.
