bladder mgmt question for female quads
How do you handle bladder management? Can you do it yourself or do you require assistance? If you use a leg bag..how do you hide it when wearing shorts, skiirt or dress? If you work how do you deal with bladder issues at work? On another note..how do you deal with the monthly cycle issue?
Thanks!! |

I have the mitrofanoff procedure- where I intermittenly cath through my bellybutton, super easy, I can do it anywhere. No leg bag, no undressing. As for the monthly cycle, I'm on birth control and instead of taking the week off to have my period I just start the cycle over again, so I don't get my period.

I wore a leg bag for 15 or so years..developed AD too many times that it was scary.
As far as dressing goes. I wore the bag high on my thigh when I wore a dress. I developed some blisters from the straps so be careful (gone now). I had an augmentation with the Mithronoff done in '96. I am a c6 complete and now intermittent cath independently as Kimmy does. I use self contained caths and can basically cath anywhere. I wear maxipads. I was on BC pills for a few years but developed a bloodclot. I got my period every month on the pill, it was just lighter. (Here's my rant: BC pills and quadriplegia do not mix.....rant over) |

Yeah, I have the Mitrofanoff too. Before I used an indwelling and didn't wear shorts or skirts. As for my period, before I went on Depo Provera and lost my period, I used tampons. The Tampax Compaq were the easiest for me to insert.

Don't you have to worry about blood clots on birth control especially being a quad. I'm a para and way too paranoid for that. Just curious

Depo Provera is a synthetic progesterone and contains no estrogen. Supposedly it has no effect on blood clotting although women with a serious clotting disorder should not take the drug. It is administered intramuscularly every 3 months. PLG
