Handicapped Parking

For a period of time I had to use a wheel chair if I was to get around. Finally I got to the point of getting around with a cane however I dont have a lot of distance. I am glad anytime I can get a parking place near the entrance of a building but when I was in "the chair" I often wondered why they didnt have some designated parking places farther away from the door. Those farther away strictly for people with wheels under their butts. That would eliminate the lazy people as well as crips like myself that gimble along on a cane from taking a spot near the door. I dont figure it will ever happen but I would think it would free up spots for people who must have more room to load/unload. I know there are also people on wheels that dont have great distance too so I suppose it is a never ending war.
And yes I am one of those people who will park my truck in a van spot, sorry I got there first, as distance is a factor.

That's all fine and good until I can't get out of my van because I don't have room. If you can walk, even if it is with a cane, why can't you park in a regular spot near door? You can still get out of a vehicle, where I cannot!!

For me I have to have my doors all the way open to get out of my vehicle. It never fails an SUV or a super size truck parks beside me and I cant get in. I cant bend my feet so to get into the vehicle my door has to be fully open. I don't have a problem with larger parking spaces further down the lot but I wish people wouldnt sandwich me in because then I have to wait until the person beside me comes out.

I see your problem Ike.

My problem is with every retiree and even people who use others tags to park in the handicapped spaces. I don't shop much at our walmart because they only have a few Handicapped spaces. Our town is mostly a retirement town....so you can see the problem created with this. I would gladly park further down if the spaces were bigger. I usually travel 20 minutes to a super walmart and they have an abundance of parking spaces as well as their regular spaces are bigger also.

I do use other spots when one is available. If no regular spots available I use whatever handicap spot that is.

I see what both of you are saying and agree with both they should make the handicap paking spaces bigger for vans and auto, I too use a cane or if it's a long distance then I have to use my walker or it will take me longer because my knees don't work like they used to , before my injury I was always ahead of my wife , I like to get in and out ,but now the table has turned she always waiting for me , what I don't care for is when you go out to eat and they bring you to the table , the way in the back somewhere when it takes more walking inside than out , and then the the restroom is on the other end of the resturant , they see us come in using a cane and we'll pass by 5 tables closer to the door , I give up my wife says well it's who gets the next table (waitress ) well they can walk I can't very well .so I understand where both are coming from ,you'll see a veterian walking with no problems at all to the eye , almost running into the bussiness , leaves me scratching my head , Our supermarket with Drug store has a total of 8 handicap spots they are large enough just not enough for a large supermarket , the only one down town . This is great, you made a point to talk about how you wish they would make a law or official rule for spots with people with wheels under their butts so to control the behavior of people like yourself who can not resist taking the spots for themselves. Just GREAT!!

Most of the handicap parking in my town are all wide enough for vans but there just isn't enough of them , now with takout at your local resturants they seem to have those spots for take are closer than the handicap and almost as many too

Miscommunication

I think what he is trying to say is that if you are using a wheelchair, as long as you have a spot that is large enough for you to get in and out of, and you are able to push with ease, to use that spot instead of a close handicapped spot, so that someone who may be upright, walking, (remeber just cause someone is walking does not mean it is easy for them) is closer for them. I am a walking para. I use my manual chair and I will park in a space further away when I am using my chair because I know that when I am not using it , I need one of the close parking spots because I can not walk very far. He isnt trying to take spots away from anyone. I think many businesses could do with more handicapped parking. I hate going to walmart cause it is very hard to find a spot. Also the van only spots, that assumes that all people who have chairs have vans, I have a truck, and need that spot to get my chairs in and out.
