SCI thingy or just me?

Not sure if it's an SCI thing or not. Every so often I believe I stop breathing during sleep. I wake up my heart is pounding and I dream I cannot breathe. Trying to awaken mysef in my dreams. It happened last night @ 3 times.

I am a mouth breather.

I don't have those dreams but I am also a mouth breather. I try throughout the day to do so with just my nose but I feel as though I'm not getting enough oxygen. Still doing those breathing exercises, well kind of to not really.

Does it feel like/or do you dream that you are choking on something (like when your swallow a hard candy by accident? That is how my sleep apnea often felt.

Do you snore? If so, then it might be obstructive sleep apnea. Do you tend to fall asleep during the day?

Most people with sleep apnea are unaware that they have it & don't typically wake fully up but that doesn't mean it is not sleep apnea.
You could have some one watch your breathing while you sleep for a while. Have them look at depth, count # of respirations & timing of respirations. Look for patterns. They can write it down as it happens & review it later.
You should be worked up for sleep apnea if you feel this is happening which requires video recoriidng etc.. overnight or longer at a sleep center.

I've been off anti-depressants for five weeks now and I get that way ... almost a clautrophobic feeling. Tiny panic attacks. Had your thyroid checked lately?

Sleep apnea I'd guess. Go to a sleep clinic and get tested.....or better yet, go to your doctor and tell him the symptoms

This happens to me too Liz. The dreams that go with are terrifying. I literally am gasping when I do wake up. I found it is caused by one thing with me--stomach sleeping. I always sleep on one of my sides but my hip joints were getting tight a few years back so I tried to sleep on my stomach with my head to one side. No matter which way I placed my head and arms I'd wake to feeling like I could not suck in air no matter what. Since I went back to my sides I haven't had a problem. Good luck finding your cause quickly.
