scoliosis

is there any way to prevent getting this? What causes it? Once you have it is there any way to correct it or is surgery going to have to happen at some point?

It can be prevented for most people by wearing an orthopedic corset with stays. We used to do this, and saw much less long term scoliosis (or quad belly) but the corsets are hot and confining, so they fell out of favor. Other than that, good seating systems and wheelchair fit can go a long way to help with prevention, and can help with minor scoliosis, but cannot correct severe scoliosis.

If the scoliosis is interfering with function, causing severe pain, contributing to skin breakdown, or causing respiratory compromise, then surgery may be indicated. This usually involves a fairly long rodding procedure, and there is not only the risks associated with this type of surgery, but significant risk that you will loose spinal mobility (twisting and bending may be difficult or impossible) due to this. A good orthopedic spine surgeon, esp. one who has experience with scoliosis in children is your best resource for options.

i have a scoliosis which was being made worse by sitting in a chair with a really low, canvas back. I was really resistant to the idea of a higher, more rigid back but was evantually persuaded it was the best way to go - since i've had it my posture is much better, i have far less back pain and my scoliosis - whilst still there - does not appear to be getting any worse.

I started wearing a corset three years after my injury (my rehab didn't believe in them. Didn't believe I had pain, either.) By then, the scoliosis had already developed.
