Any Info on Puerto Rico?
I am thinking about a family vacation in Puerto Rico next March. It would include my son, who uses a manual wheelchair. I searched the site and found some old info, but it's outdated now. Any recommendations, suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Was Puerto Rico your only choice?

Not the Only Choice, but...
We've never been there, and I want to go somewhere we haven't been before, for a variety of reasons. I want a direct flight from Newark, NJ, and not too long, either. It sounds like a beautiful place, so I'm going to ckeck it out. Other suggestions??

I would suggest contacting the PVA chapter in San Juan and see what tips they can provide for you. I know our team had a great time there when the NVWG were there a few years ago.
Also, check out some of the disability travel sites like www.access-able.com and http://www.globalaccessnews.com/ for articles on travel in Puerto Rico. (KLD) |

Here are a few reviews and resources. I know several people (with tetraplegia) who have had a great time there, esp. staying around Luquillo Beach (which is accessible and has beach chairs for rent):

Thank you!
Thank you for the recommendations, SCI Nurse. I'll be checking those sites.
Wheelie Girl - do you have any details on your friend's trip? They might tell me places or areas to avoid (or re-think my destination!). I appreciate your help. |

I've been to PR twice. I stayed in San Juan at the Caribe Hilton (don't) and a couple years ago we stayed at the San Juan Marriott...nice place. Marriott is accessible if you stay in the "Cabana wing" overlooking the pool area-do not stay in the main tower, on the beach and very close to other stores, restaurants and hotels. Rainforest is cool, Camuey Caves were very cool but steep and slippery inside, downtown San Juan has a lot of hills but plenty of curb cuts, a handful of casinos in the hotels, Loquillo Beach is accessible, the weather is tropical.....usually hot and humid although you can get some rain too.

Due to a sudden change in plans, we had to scrap our plans for Myrtle Beach and hopped on a good deal for flight/hotel to Puerto Rico. We'll be staying at the Conrad in Condado. I'm trying to get a crash course on what I need to know as a T6 in a manual chair.

I was somewhat disappointed that nobody was able to give any current information in this thread. Surely out of all of the board members, someone has some up to date info on PR. Anyways, I'll be posting some info from my trip and experiences shortly.
