Hats off to Dove

check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT4dpFpiTgk

so the dork in me sees this as pretentious marketing, but nonetheless it carries a good message for today's culture so I figured it's worth sharing.

but...

- realistically it doesn't take *that* much work to make someone look good. I know more photography stuff than I let on, and I have a friend who's a makeup artist. This ad takes it to the extreme, and thus is stupid from that perspective.

- the program you see in there isn't Photoshop. I'm trying to figure out what was used.

I saw that commercial on Ellen the other day...Was talking 'bout how the Dove commericals don't use anyone who's disabled in their "Campaign for Real Beauty"...HMMMM.......

Could the program have been Corel? Tools looked like the tool panel from when I had Corel WAAYYYYYY back when.....but it's been MANY years since I got to play with it....

Dove has a clever marketing team and has tapped into an 'anti' feeling. It is a clever ad in one way but there's still a weird paradox to it. Ignore the digital trickery at the end and many women would say.......'wow....pro make up and hair styling could make me look like that' but Dove is actually about simple products that don't do that........presumably leaving you looking like the girl who first sits down - not unattractive but not wow.

So what exactly does the ad achieve in terms of selling product?

I preferred the earlier campaigns.

I'm not convinced about this 'real beauty' campaign. What is 'real beauty' anyway. We should celebrate all shapes, looks and sizes without insinuating that attractive people are 'fake.' It suggests that every attractive model we see is a result of trickery and that just isn't true. They already face stigma, this adds to it.

As for marketing, it is a fact that men and women alike will opt for advertising using thin and beautiful people over more 'run of the mill' looking actors/models. Taking Aesthetics into account, this will likely never change.

Great find Scott, hadn't seen that yet.

I want to find a talented graphic artist to touch up my myspace pics!

wow, i think it's great that they're showing this. i knew about the 3 hours for hair and makeup and airbrushing but i didn't know that the beauty industry actually changed the size and position of peoples facial features. i thought that was done through lighting and camera angles, not digital enhancement. so we really are striving for artificial beauty.

Hats off.... or simply a change of hats...?

Similar issue topics have been discussed recently. I had posted on Dove's "Real Beauty" marketing campaign in this thread: Plus Sizes, so will just quote:

Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty -- A more altruistic and empathic campaign? A progressive and sensitive marketing campaign to serve consumer needs? A clever marketing scheme to target neglected consumer groups? Subtle or blatantly overt (depending on perspective) patronization of a media culture, all too eager to be cajoled into spending their money.

None? All?

Do any not involve a profit motive?

Ok you guys remember this next time oogling the models and compare us mere mortals with them!
It really is amazing what professional makeup artists can do. I had one for this silly photoshoot and I didn't recognize myself, even I thought I looked hot!

No need for make-up and electronic wizardry. Just give that man a few stiff drinks; any woman becomes a super model.
