Blood in Stool

On Saturday and then again last night, Isaac had a small amount of blood in Stool. We use the liquid baby lax (small liquid tube inserted in rectum)for his bowel movements every other night. Also give him benefiber. Is this from his rectum being irritated from sticking things in there?

probably. he may have a hemhorroid. as long as you are following all other advice for proper diet, fluids and bowel care, a little blood shouldn't be alarming.

if it continues, however, then consider seeing a rectal doc for his advice. dark blood (as opposed to bright red) in the stool can be a sign of a more serious problem higher up, this needs to be seen promptly.

there's a prescription product called proctofoam which is easy to use for mild hemhorroid treatment. you pump some medicated foam into the rectum 2x/day and it helps shrink irritated tissues. it's worth a try before injection or worse

I would call his doctor about this.
We have had dogs that show blood in stool when being induced to move the bowels.
Occasionally it was from irritation.
Usually though it was from the meds. they were taking causing a small ulcer in their
intestines.
Better nipping this in the bud..before it
becomes worse no matter what it is.
Your the best girl.
Good luck.

A little bit of bright red blood in stool with bowel care is not really all that alarming. People with spinal cord injury are more prone to developing hemorrhoids and a little bleeding with bowel care is really not a medical problem. Just part of the normal process. So I wouldn't worry. You can use an over the counter suppository or cream for hemorrhoids and that tends to soothe the tissue and help it heal. But apart from that, I don't think you need to worry.

Nurse at what point where do you draw the line between normal hemorrhoid and other sci related
bleeding & the possible symptoms of colon cancer?

Bleeding from colon cancer (unless it is really advanced) is usually not visible in the stool and has to be tested for (guaiac cards). Bright red blood, especially in small quantities is usually from hemorrhoids or local irritation from hard stool. Of course, the only absolutely certain way to tell the difference is with a colonoscopy which is a rather unpleasant test but the real bottom line in ruling out colon cancer.

There is a difference between blood On the stool and blood In the stool.

Generally speaking blood On the stool is from hemeroids or small tears and is generally bright red in color. This is little cause for alarm.

Blood In the stool is difficult to detect with the naked eye and usually requires lab testing to verify. Sometimes blood In the stool will make the stool very dark in color. Blood in the stool can be a sign of other symptoms such as a bleeding ulcer.
