tipping

I can not figure this out for the life of me. It seems to get more and more complicated as time goes on. I want to be proper but I don't want to go broke in the process so I was wondering if anyone here could help me with a little tipping etiqutte.

-I understand the waitstaff and that is 15%
-hairdressers??? when did those start expecting one anyway? I am paying for the haircut and then on top of that you want me to tip you for doing it?
-pizza delivery
-hotel
-someone carries groceries to your car

those are just the ones I can think of right now, but I know there is more. I always thought tipping was a "above and beyond" sort of deal. When did it turn into an "expected thing"?

How do I sort out where and when and how much I am suppose to tip?

I have never tipped hairdressers except for an extra 20 at Christmas. I do servers and pizza delivery.

Our grocery store policy is that carry out is a service they provide and to not tip bag boys....it is an expected service. (ingles-they have a sign in front window)

One thing is at the airport....if someone transports you in a wheelchair because walking (I walk really slow with braces and a cane and when i booked the tickets they noted that I would require a chair because we only had 20 minutes between flights) I would not be on time for my flight.... They also expect a tip.... I didnt realize this until the lady asked. She asked???? yes

I only consider tipping hair stylists if I'm real pleased with the work and/or the spirit moves me. If the establishment generates that you're expected to tip, I'll move on.

Pizza Delivery: I'll do this to the tune of a buck or two when I feel like it and/or am flush. I haven't found that it affects service, product quality or attitude but it probably helps if you do it once in a while.

Someone who carries groceries to your vehicle shouldn't be tipped; they are employed and paid by the store you bought your groceries from and that should cover the break they get by getting out of there at as long as it takes to shift your purchases. I've found the clerks and bag people who do this to be very accommodating and they've never indicated to me the expectation of a tip. Most supermarkets don't want you tipping their employees.

i didnt even read anyones post, but just a little technique i use.. at least here in new york where tax is roughly 8%. Since the tip is suppose to be 15% for restaurants, i just double the tax... I know I know, im a genius. but honestly it saves a little time

Before my SCI I was a hairdresser and I always got a tip it would be any where from 3-5 dollars. When i go out to eat I always double the tax and if the waiter was very good i give a extra 2-3 dollars. Everyone has different ways of doing things. anty

My hairdresser gets $5 on top of the $27 haircut - 1) because I have long hair 2) because they're always good at getting me in and working around my chair and 3) $10 for special occassions or if I get a new style which is rare

I tip at the car wash - only buy the workers a pop ($2 @)

Groceries to the car - enough for a coffee ($2)

Food Delivery - round it up to an even number .. if $18.21 I give them $20 ... I'm generous in tipping if I dine out because I'm usually with a crowd then

I tip cents (rounding to next dollar) at the drive-thru for my tea before work.

Anything else where someone goes out of their way.

My haircut tip is nine dollars and at restaurants an adequate amount and even more if she's cute.

Like Scarlett O'Hara, many/most of the people that are dear to me have depended on the kindness of strangers at some point. The lasting effect has been that I always overtip in amounts that far exceed conventional guidelines.

My usual tip at restaurants is 20%. But more times than not its more. Why should someone get a $25 or $30 tip on a $150 meal and only tip $2 or $3 for a $12 meal. If the service is good for a $12 meal I'll probably give $17 or $20 and let them keep the change especially if they are trying hard. Its a tough job and they make their money on tips. I know shorter meals and more tables but heck it looks like a tough job...

The same woman has been cutting my hair for 18 years or so. The haircut is $20 and I always give her $30. I get my haircut every 3 or 4 weeks.

When I lived in a loft I had door people and the building would start a Christmas fund every year to split the money between the "doormen". I always gave separate cards because some were better than others or they would give a person who was working 4 months the same as someone who had worked all 12 months.

$3 to $5 per bag for doorman/valets at hotels.

No tip for the cleaning people except at Christmas.
