Magnets and Computer Screens

I was using my 'laptop/notebook/' and I moved it across my face and it came close to my glasses which have magnets attached for the magnetic sunglass part and it messed up my screen. Is there anything I can do to fix it or is there a way I can get a new screen on it? It sucks and pisses me off when I look at it. Thanks, guys

Hi WonderDerek,

It should fix itself within a day or too. If not, you may have a feature in the Options of your monitor to "degauss" it.

At least this is how CRT monitors work. I once moved my monitor too close to my subwoofer (magnet) and it turned the whole upper left-hand third of my screen a pretty pink color. In about a day it "fixed" itself". That older monitor didn't have a built-in degausser.

I remember when it happened. I called the local TV repair shop and they said to bring it in and they would professionally degauss it for $40. There are hand-held degaussers that electronic shops use.... it's a retangular magnetic "magic wand" that they move in front of the monitor to help realign the phosphate coating on the back of the glass screen or something. Before I was able to get it to the shop it had already fixed itself 100%. I think they were trying to make an easy $40 off of me!

I don't know if LCDs are the same though. I'll look around for some more info on LCD screens.

EDIT:

LCDs aren't affected by magnetic fields like CRTs so degaussing wouldn't help. Maybe your glasses or the magnet(s) hit the screen a bit too hard and damaged it. If you didn't "rupture" the pixels here's a website that may be of help. Be gentle... hopefully you didn't permanently damage the screen or pixels.

What's does the damage look like?

The picture on most TV’s are produced by electron beams that are steered by magnetic fields produced and controlled around the neck of the CRT(called a yoke). The picture can be distorted by magnets and/or some other electrical appliances. TV’s have a coil around the picture area of the tube called a “degaussing coil” that resets the area surrounding the TV to a neutral state when you turn off the TV, it’s what makes that crackling sound when you turn the TV off

Laptop or LCD displays don’t use beamed electrons; they use a fixed fluorescent light source that is “shuttered” to control brightness and color and are not sensitive to magnetic sources

Hi WonderDerek,

Did you try the suggestion at the link in my previous post?
Quote:

How to Fix a Stuck Pixel on an LCD Monitor.

If your LCD screen has a stuck or dead pixel , it's usually malfunctioning because the liquid in the liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) has not covered the whole screen. This can be easily fixed.

Steps

1-Turn off your computer's monitor.

2-Get yourself a damp cloth, so that you don't scratch your screen.
Apply pressure to the area where the stuck pixel is.

3-Do not put pressure anywhere else, as this may make more stuck pixels.

4-While applying pressure, turn on your computer and screen.

5-Remove pressure and the stuck pixel should be gone. This works as the liquid in the liquid crystal has not spread into each little pixel. This liquid is used with the backlight on your monitor, allowing different amounts of light through, which creates the different colours.
Be careful and gentle. Or just wait a while longer and see if it fixes itself.

Again, what does the damage look like?
